If you need a simple treat that everyone goes crazy over, it’s OREO BALLS! They’re super easy to make and they taste incredible. You can top them with Oreos and a swirl of chocolate like I do here, or you can be festive and top with holiday sprinkles.

Oreo Balls Recipe with Cream Cheese

Only 3 ingredients for an amazing bite sized, no-bake dessert! All you have to do is crush up the Oreo cookies and mix them with the cream cheese and then shape the mixture into balls. Freeze the balls for about 20 minutes and then dip them in melted chocolate. For this recipe, I chose to use vanilla almond bark, but you could also use regular semi-sweet chocolate if you prefer that.

What’s that 3 pronged fork you use to dip your Oreo Cream Cheese Balls?

The 3 pronged fork I use to dip each Oreo Ball is ahandy Wilton Dipping tool. It’s part of a 3 piece set that make it so incredibly easy to dip candy, or cookie truffles like these, in chocolate.

What chocolate is best for dipping?

When making candy like this I really find thatdipping chocolate just works best. However, you can use chocolate chips instead. I find it works best when you add a small amount – about 1/2 tsp- of shortening or coconut oil to the chocolate chips when you melt them in the microwave.

How do you melt chocolate in the microwave?

Melting chocolate in the microwave is easy if you go slowly. Always use a glass or ceramic bowl and chocolate that’s not old. To melt 1 cup of chocolate chips I’d begin with 1 minute in the microwave. After the 1 minute, let chocolate sit for 2-3 minutes. Then, gently stir and see if chocolate begins to melt smooth. If it’s still really solid, add 20 seconds in the microwave, then let it sit again. Often chocolate looks like it’s not melted when it really is, and you don’t know for sure until you gently stir it. If your chocolate melts but it’s too thick to work with, try adding 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil or shortening, then letting it melt and stirring it in.

Oreo Balls Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make our classic Oreo Balls:

  • 1 package OREO Cookies, finely crushed (15.25 oz. pkg) (reserve 1 cookie for sprinkling on top of completed Oreo Balls)
  • Cream cheese, softened (to soften, you can either let it sit on the countertop for an hour or two, or you can microwave a clean wet cloth for 30 seconds, then wrap the cream cheese in it and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Repeat if necessary, until cream cheese is soft.
  • Melting chocolate, white chocolate and semi-sweet

How to Make Oreo Balls

Here’s how to make Oreo Balls:

Crush the OREO cookies

I used a blender, but you can use a small food processor, or you can place the cookies in a sealed plastic bag and smash them with a meat mallet! I found that the blender worked best when I did half the cookies at a time, rather than trying to crush all 36 at once. Use a fork to stir the mixture up between blends to get the finest consistency.

Combine with Cream Cheese

Mix the crumbs with the cream cheese until well blended.

Scoop Oreo Balls

Use a cookie scoopto measure out about 1.5 TBSP of the cookie mixture and roll each scoop into a ball. Place Oreo balls on a parchment or wax paper lined cookie sheet.

Chill to retain shape

Freeze the balls for about 20-30 minutes before dipping. Don’t skip this step! The balls need to be chilled before you dip them in the melted chocolate. If they aren’t chilled, you will end up with a lot of crumbs in your melting chocolate and they won’t look quite as pretty! You’re welcome to divide the directions into 2 parts and make the truffles the day or night before, then dip them in chocolate the next day.

Dip the Oreo Balls in Chocolate

Melt the candy coating or melting chocolate in the microwave for about 1 minute 20 seconds. Stir gently until smooth, returning to the microwave in 15 second increments, if needed.

Dip each ball in the chocolate and place back on lined pan.

Decorative Toppings for Oreo Cream Cheese Balls

Place 2 TBSP white chocolate in one sandwich bag and 2 TBSP dark chocolate in another. Microwave for 30 seconds. Gently massage the bag. Snip a tiny corner of the bag and drizzle opposite chocolate onto each Oreo ball. Remove cream filling from reserved Oreo cookie.Place cookies in a bag and smash. Sprinkle each Oreo Ball with cookie crumbs.

FAQs

What is the best way to crush Oreos? ›

You can use your blender or food processor to make Oreo crumbs. Or place the cookies in a plastic bag and hit them with a rolling pin until they're crushed. Use the crushed Oreos in any of your favorite desserts.

Why are my Oreo balls greasy? ›

Why are my oreo balls oily? This could mean that you used a little too much cream cheese or the balls aren't cold enough. When you roll them with your hands it melts the balls slightly and causes the oils from the cream cheese to seep out.

Why are my Oreo balls falling apart? ›

If you find your chocolate is still too thick, add another 1/4 teaspoon of oil. Oreo balls are falling apart: The chocolate is too hot. Let the chocolate sit for a few minutes to slightly cool down and then try again.

Do Oreo balls need to stay refrigerated? ›

Make sure you store the Oreo balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If you leave them on the counter, the chocolate will get soft. You want to make sure they are chilled until ready to serve. The Oreo balls will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.

How many Oreos make 2 cups crushed? ›

For a typical Oreo pie crust, you need 2 cups of Oreo crumbs (packed), so grind up 22 Oreos, which should yield about 2 cups crumbs (250g). If a recipe calls for chopped Oreos (not crumbs), like this cookies and cream cake, use 8 Oreos for 1 cup chopped (90g).

How do you keep Oreo balls from sweating? ›

However, if the outside of the Oreo ball is wet, it is just condensation from going from the fridge to room temperature. Move them back to the fridge for a bit. Going from the cold fridge to a warm room will make the surface sweat. The best way to prevent this is to store them in the fridge up until serving.

Why are my Oreo balls cracking and oozing out an oil? ›

A: I have found mine cracks if I overheat the chocolate before dipping, or if I freeze the cake balls/pops very long before dipping. Make sure you very gently heat your chocolate–you never want it to get hot but just barely warm enough to melt.

What is the white stuff in Oreos called? ›

You may have noticed that any time that filling is mentioned on Oreo packaging, it's called “creme.” This is no typo. Technically, the creamy filling inside an Oreo is not cream at all: The recipe used actually contains no dairy; as such, the FDA prohibits Nabisco from labeling the product as “cream.”

How long can Oreo balls stay unrefrigerated? ›

Oreo balls will keep for 3 days at room temp (if it's not too warm), 3 weeks in the refrigerator, or 2 months in the freezer. They should always be stored in a covered container.

Is it okay to freeze Oreo balls? ›

Can You Freeze Oreo Truffles? Yes, you can freeze Oreo truffle balls for up to three months. Flash freeze them for a few hours or up to overnight on a cookie sheet, then transfer to zip-top containers or another freezer-safe storage container.

Why was Oreo cereal discontinued? ›

In 2007, both companies ceased co-branding, which made the cereal impossible to produce. Kraft foods owned the copyrights to the name Oreo, yet Post owned the copyrights to the cereal recipe itself. Neither company wished to relinquish either rights; therefore forcing the cereal to become discontinued worldwide.

Can I eat cream cheese that was left out overnight? ›

Cream cheese should not be left out longer than two hours at room temp (or higher than 40 degrees F) because it then becomes a playground for nasty bacteria like salmonella. No one wants a trip to the emergency room over the carrot cake. If it's been out for longer than two hours, toss it—better safe than sorry.

What happens when you freeze an Oreo? ›

I wondered how an Oreo could taste different—and, more importantly, how an Oreo could taste even better. Freezing it, that's how. The cookie gets perfectly snappy, and the creme takes on a bolder flavor and consistency.

How do you store Oreos for years? ›

In the freezer! You can best store an Oreo cookie for about 10 years, is appropriately and heavily air-tight wrapped… and left in the door of the freezer for a decade.

How do you pulverize Oreos? ›

Place Oreo cookies in food processor (do not remove the cream filling) and pulverize until only fine crumbs remain. If you do not have a food processor, place cookies in a Ziploc bag (let all of the air out before sealing) and beat with a rolling pin or mallet until only fine crumbs remain.

What is the best way to crush cookies? ›

You can put them in a zipper plastic bag and crush with a meat tenderizer or rolling pin. Or use a food processor or electric chopper if you have one.

How do you crush cookies easily? ›

Place a dish towel over the bag. This will help to lessen the chances of the bag tearing or ripping when crushing. Take a rolling pin and roll over the bag of cookies. Continue rolling over the bag until you have reached the desired size pieces of cookie crumbs.

Can you use a kitchen aid to crush Oreos? ›

Crush Oreos with food processor or immersion blender. Remove 1/4 cup for topping. Using a handheld or KitchenAid mixer, mix cream cheese and crushed Oreos until well blended.
